Brantwood House
Brantwood House
This was the home of John Ruskin, (1819-1900), the highly influential art critic and author who lived here from 1872 until his death. He greatly approved of the Pre-Raphaelite art movement and was no mean artist himself. Although not overtly religious he became something of a Christian socialist and railed against social injustice and rampant capitalism. The house is now maintained as a museum in his memory and it is interesting looking out at the magnificent view over Coniston Water and the Old Man of Coniston which must have inspired his later writings.
