River Wear playspot R.I.P.
River Wear playspot R.I.P.
A shingle rapid downstream of Stanhope on the River Wear. Here the water, already fast-flowing from the shingle rapid, was additionally constricted by a large (more than 5m long) boulder river left - just visible on the right of this picture. The result was a fine playwave with good eddy service both sides, but particularly from river left. Sadly for canoeists, the boulder, though still visible on Google Maps, has been removed from the river, leaving an easier rapid with little or no play potential. The paddlers here were Pete Ball and Johnny Proud of Swaledale Outdoor Club.
