Tower, Thurstonland, Yorkshire
I supposed that this must be a folly, but it is strange that there is no path to it. I have received a suggestion that it was called the 'Water Tower' and that there might be an underground reservoir there. This photo was taken from Green Side Road 600m away (with telephoto and cropping). I should be grateful for any further information. Incidentally it is shown on the 6"/mile map (60s?) (but not on the 1850 map) and is exactly on the 17 grid line.

This building is on p.16 of Jim Jarratt, Ivory Towers & Dressed Stones, Vol.2 Yorkshire, Cicerone 1994.

"This red brick tower, almost Babylonial in appearance, is a structure of unknown origin. It appears to have been some sort of a pumping station associated with Storthes Hall Hospital. It seems unlikely that it was built as a folly, but a quick and unofficial visit satisfied me that whatever the building's function once was, it no longer fulfils it. A brick hole in its concrete floor is now filled with rubble and the building is in a ruinous condition. If it wasn't a folly, it certainly is one now!"
