Looking west across the rooftops of houses on Hengate from the top deck of a bus in Beverley bus station. Starting out as a chapel of ease built in around 1120, St Mary's became a parish church in 1269 and was greatly remodelled and extended over the next few centuries. The original tower fell down in 1520 and had to be replaced.
