Carleton Castle Motte
Carleton Castle Motte
This motte, or mound, was created in the 12th Century, long before Carleton Castle was built. The motte is about 5 metres high and was 20 metres across the top, where a wooden palisaded structure would have been built.(Source: "The Castles Of South-West Scotland", by Mike Salter).
