Grave of Alfred Mathias. Died Hyde Park Barracks, London 12 March 1853 aged 24.
Grave of Alfred Mathias. Died Hyde Park Barracks, London 12 March 1853 aged 24.
The headstone now rests against the north wall. He was the son of William and Catherine of this parish. I wonder how he died?
His epitaph reads:
' My friends grieve not my early fate
You all must try this untry'd state
When my memory brings a sigh
Apply the words I too must die.'

Sobering!
