Murray's Handbook (1890) states: "a most picturesque and lofty semi-circular arch over the Till, 90'7" in span, and 46'2" high. It was built in the 16th century by a lady of the Selby family". Mentioned also in Sir Walter Scott's 'Marmion' (Canto VI) wrt the Battle of Flodden Field.
