Remains of a cairn on the Hill of Standing Stones
In the background, the modern cairn that marks the summit of the Hill of Standing Stones is visible: NS4380 : Hill of Standing Stones.

The Canmore database mentions the remains of an older cairn, some 45m to the east of the modern one; see LinkExternal link

That ancient cairn, with a robbed centre, is shown in the foreground of the photo. A later picture provides a better view: NS4380 : Remains of a cairn on the Hill of Standing Stones.

The structure of the cairn is difficult to show photographically, because of the surrounding vegetation, but the tuft of tall grass in the middle of the present image is growing in the depressed centre of the cairn; the green course of the left-hand side of the cairn can be seen curving around that tuft. Some small stones are visible, embedded into the near side of the cairn. Its right-hand side, however, is largely obscured by the tall vegetation.

In any case, the structure is clear enough when examining the cairn in person; other small stones can be seen inside the central hollow, indicating (as mentioned by Canmore) that the centre has been disturbed.

Another mound, a possible ancient cairn, is located only a few metres away: NS4380 : Possible cairn on the Hill of Standing Stones.
The Hill of Standing Stones
Some consider the hill to be named after a large cairn that formerly covered a nearby cist (see LinkExternal link for details), but I believe that the name refers instead to march stones that stood here, and which are probably now to be found in the summit cairn. A planning application for a 10-turbine wind farm centred on the hill was rejected in October 2013. An old drove road LinkExternal link passed over the hill; one of its cattle stance markers LinkExternal link is still there.
