Quatrefoil window, St Mary's, Tatsfield
In the south wall of the chancel of the church (see TQ4156 : Church of St Mary the Virgin, Tatsfield).

A board by the window reads:

“The purpose of this quatrefoil (i.e. “four-leaved”) window, which is probably of 13th century origin, is somewhat uncertain. A bell may have been rung from it to let workers in the surrounding fields know that the consecration of bread and wine was about to take place or this sacrament may have been given out though the window to those who were suffering from a contagious illness. It may, of course, have been put there just to provide light for the priest in the chancel.

Whatever the intention, the design of the surrounding stonework was carefully considered. The main outline is clearly based on four circles which intersect each other at one point in the middle of the window. The centres of these circles are at the corners of a square and lines joining the centres of the circles would form a diamond shape, which shows that our medieval architect clearly had some insight into geometry!”
