Portobello Pumping Station
Portobello Pumping Station
The main outflow of all wastewater from Brighton. Portobello first came into operation in 1874 when a new intercepting sewer stretching from Hove to the outfall here was built to remove much of the waste from Brighton. With few changes and extensions this remained the system until Southern Water built a new waste treatment plant here in 1977 though it did not become operational until 1983. The volume of waste coming from Brighton has increased necessitating another new building as well as extending the sewer to a new works to the north east of Peacehaven. The sea defences erected to protect the pumping station has caused a small shingle beach to build up between the two main groynes. This beach is open to the public and although there are specific instructions regarding the criminality of nudity this beach has always been known as a nudist beach certainly since I lived in the area back in the early 1980s.
