An Gorta Mor is the Gaeilge for The Great Hunger, also known as the Irish Famine, when, at a time Ireland was still exporting grain, a million people starved to death in that country and another million emigrated, thousands of them to Liverpool. This event helped to shape the unique character of Liverpool.
