This view of the end of a wood stack not only makes an interesting pattern but clearly shows the growth rings. These rings are laid down, one each year, and by counting the rings one can work out the age of the log. In this case the trees would have been older that these logs as the logs come from some way up the trunk, while to get the age of the tree you need to examining the oldest part, which is the stump.
