Compare this restored view with SO9600 : Sapperton Canal Tunnel. The tunnel was opened in 1798 and is 3817 yards (3.5km) in length. At the time of its opening it was a record breaking achievement, both due to its length and its width (15ft). The longest in canal tunnels in the UK had up until that point been built only for 7ft beam narrow boats.
