Sluice gates, River Frome
These sluice gates were used to divert water from the main channel of the river on to the water meadows, in this case in the direction of Stinsford. These gates are located a few hundred metres above Greys Bridge. The gates that were originally on the main channel have been removed, leaving only the gates on this side the Stinsford channel. There was an extensive array of channels and sluices that extended over the flood plain of the river. Regular flooding of the meadows in winter allowed more grass to be grown to feed the dairy cattle.
