The former railway station in Walsingham
Since the closing of the railway line in 1964, the old station building houses St Seraphim's Russian Orthodox church, the church of the local Orthodox parish within the Diocese of Sourozh (Moscow Patriarchate) under its Bishop Metropolitan Anthony. An icon workshop is located beneath the chapel. This view was taken from Station Road. See also > LinkExternal link. The inspiration for establishing an Orthodox presence in Walsingham coincided with the start of the building in 1931 of the Anglican Shrine. Encouraged by Father Fynes-Clinton, rector of St Magnus-the-Martyr, London, and one of the Guardians of the Shrine, Father Hope Patten invited the Orthodox to take part in the venture. See LinkExternal link for a more detailed history.

Walsingham once used to be connected to the railway network by the Norwich via Fakenham, Dereham and Wymondham route, with the final regular steam journey taking place on the 17th September 1955. Diesel units took over the next day, with but for a short while some Saturday extras continued to be steam operated. Steam-hauled freight continued into the early 1960s. Despite an hourly passenger service to Norwich which took between 32 and 40 minutes, the increased use of road transport lead to a decline in passenger numbers and the line from Dereham to Wells finally closed on October 5th 1964.
