Official Source of the River Thames
Official Source of the River Thames
The explanatory ST9899 : Plaque at Official Source of the Thames and "source" lies at the foot foot of a bank along the top of which runs the course of the Thames and Severn Canal. The canal along this length was always notoriously leaky and this was a contributory factor in its demise.

It was only in the 19th Century, during the period during which the canal was in operation, that this was designated the official Source of the Thames. This followed much debate about various claims as to which was the most appropriate source with the most significant contender being SO9616 : Seven Springs at the head of the Churn.

These days the canal bed is dry, as is the "source" except following periods of wet weather. Is it just a coincidence that on such occasions when the springs in the Sapperton Canal Tunnel provide sufficient water to reach the canal bed at this point the "Source" again starts to flow?
