Reeds at the head of Ullswater
Reeds at the head of Ullswater
Goldrill Beck has deposited a lot of silt at the head of Ullswater (which used to extend further south) leaving a flat floodplain and shallow water at this end of the lake. Alders and birches colonise such low-lying land, helping to trap more silt and build the level up, whilst the shallow water supports reed beds, which form excellent cover for various birds to nest, so although kayaks can penetrate these reed beds, April is not the time of year to do so !
