The ball clay operations here on either side of the B3193 are sited on the Abbrook member clays of the sediments. These clays "have more disordered kaolinite and micaceous mineral than the clays higher in the sequence. Consequently they have a higher green and plasticity and a cream fired colour. They are also vitreous firing." (Industrial minerals and extractive industry geology, edited by P. W. Scott, Colin Malcolm Bristow, Geological Society of London, 2002.)
