The Common Kist
The Common Kist
This site is described in the Canmore database (see end-note).

Just behind the large stone visible at the bottom of the image, a rectangular opening can be seen, although it is rather obscured by vegetation, and is better seen in close-up. It appears more clearly in NS4380 : The Common Kist; see that item for the main description of the site.

That pit is a cist (a burial chamber lined with stone slabs); it would originally have had a stone lid. The cist was formerly covered by a cairn.

Behind the pit, two other stones are visible (these are located about halfway up the photo, and are positioned left and right of centre). These are the orthostats, the possible kerb-stones, that are mentioned in the Canmore database entry.
The Common Kist
A burial chamber in the form of a cist (a coffin-like chamber made of stone slabs). It was originally covered by a large cairn; see LinkExternal link (at Canmore) for further details. A similar cist LinkExternal link is located not far to the south-west, and the Hill of Standing Stones LinkExternal link is nearby.
