Old grocer's shop, Crickhowell
It's nice to see that the original frontage has been preserved here, in what seems inevitably to be the usual kind of twee gift shop aimed at visitors. Back in the 50s, and before, it was an old-fashioned grocer with polished wooden counters on either side (dry goods on the right, perishables on the left)and a cashier at the back. You told the grocer what you needed and he took it off the shelves, or the dairy counter, wrapped it up and handed it to you; or you could leave your weekly shopping list and come back to collect a box, or have it delivered even. Not much choice as to brands but such as Tate & Lyle or Peek Frean were familiar names that everyone trusted.
There was another rival grocer, Ravenhill's, further down the street but that went self-service at a very early stage.
