NY8828 : High Force gorge

taken 15 years ago, near to Ettersgill, County Durham, England

High Force gorge
High Force gorge
In this winter view, High Force is running at a higher level than you'd expect for such frozen conditions, as Cow Green Reservoir was releasing considerably more water than its usual minimum compensation flow. Some water has been trickling down the river left fall, usually dry, and has made it into an icefall, though conditions were not cold enough that it would have been a safe climbing proposition. Icicles also adorn the river right cliff, which gets the majority of the spray blown from the fall itself. Fortunately, spray doesn't usually reach the rocks of this viewpoint, just off the public footpath - ice here would make taking photos like this particularly hazardous.
