West Hull Pumping Station
West Hull Pumping Station
Sewage pumping station at the corner of West Dock Avenue and Goulton Street, owned by Yorkshire Water and currently being renovated. The station was built in 1957 together with a network of sewers to pump flood water and sewage from as far away as Cottingham, Willerby, Anlaby and Hessle into the River Humber. On completion of this project and a similar one in east Hull, the city was considered to have a state of the art drainage system and many of the open water courses in and around Hull were filled in or replaced with sewer pipes in the interests of child safety. From around 2000 a new system was introduced where all sewage and flood water was diverted via pipelines to a new treatment works at Salt End, LinkExternal link putting an end to raw sewage being pumped directly into the Humber. West Hull Pumping Station was kept operational for emergency use only. During the floods in June 2007, Hull's new sewerage and pumping infrastructure was, according to the interim report by the Indepentent Review Body, "filled to capacity and over-whelmed by the severity of the storms and the concentration of the rainfall". The IRB recommended that pumping capacity in Hull should be increased and that a number of decommissioned pumps at West Hull Pumping Station should be reinstated.
