The Warneford Hospital
The Warneford Hospital
Originally called The Oxford Lunatic Asylum, the hospital opened in 1826, the first of many to take advantage of the salubrious air of Headington's sandy, elevated land. It was subsequently named after the Gloucestershire vicar who was a major benefactor. In 1847 it was promoted as being "for the accommodation of lunatics selected from the higher classes of society"; indeed its expansive grounds and gothic architecture still give it something of the air of a country hotel. At the same time it has long been in the forefront of many groundbreaking psychiatric, psychodynamic and psychological approaches to mental illness.
