This shows the remnants of the double rampart and ditches near the south entrance of this iron-age hillfort fort. The fort covers 11 acres and was built on a spur of plateau gravel 148 metres ASL, protected by these double ramparts for most of the perimeter. In its time, before the Romans came to Britain
Link it would have dominated the countryside to the north of Newbury. Today the area of the fort is private woodland. The M4 motorway, near junction 13, runs just below the north side of the fort. See other views

Apart from some trial trenching, the site has not been investigated. It is thought that it was occupied as early as the 6th century BC (2500 years ago) and probably supported a fluctuating population of up to 300 ancient Britons over several hundred years
