SO2634 : Upper Olchon valley
near to Craswall, Herefordshire, Great Britain

Upper Olchon valley
This landscape isn't as natural as you might think. Trees were cut centuries ago for making charcoal when lime was made in the valley. There are at least two strata of limestone at fairly high level and there's a ruined lime kiln very near the place where I stood to take this photo. An outcrop of limestone is less than 50 metres away up the hillside beside a well cut steep old path.
Sheep grazing has altered the vegetation and I was pleased to hear from a local farmer that he has agreed to take his huge number of sheep down from these hills for 6 months each year.
