The settlement of Gritnam was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a manor in Brockenhurst. Its name is possibly from the Old English for "estate at the gravelly place". Nowadays it is a tiny hamlet down a tiny lane from the hamlet of Bank, in the sylvan setting of Gritnam Wood.
