Road along former runway at Stoney Cross airfield, New Forest
It is no surprise that this very straight, very flat, road follows the course of one of the three runways of the disused RAF airfield known as "Stoney Cross". This view is looking northeast towards the junction at Janesmoor Plain. The green grassy area to the right of the road was also part of the runway. The airfield was operational between 1942 and 1946, used by the RAF and USAF. The concrete beneath the parked car marks the point where another of the runways crossed this one. The layout of the runways shows up clearly on modern aerial photographs.
