NY3311 : Achille Ratti Hostel Dunmail RaiseI wonder if there is anybody out there that has stayed in this hostel, In 1953 with St Patricks 17th Widnes scouts I spent a holiday there. I remember the steam engine pulling into Windermere Station where we all got off the train and boarded an old single decker bus that was waiting for us. Off we chugged through Ambleside and Grasmere and out into wild's of Dunmail Raise where we stopped across the road from the hostel, as we got off the bus we saw our first mountains and the thing that stuck in my mind was the silence, just the noise of water flowing off the hills into the streams and becks, one of which "Acker" Bates promptly slipped into! We had a great time over the duration of our holiday, taking a bus ride into Keswick and getting back late for dinner, for which three or four of us were sentenced to do fatigues on the next day, cleaning a big old stove as I recall while the rest started to climb Helm Crag, we were allowed to go after them so it all turned out fine in the end.
On the last night we all sang songs around a big campfire at the rear of the hostel. Not sure if the AA box in the picture is the original one but there was one on the same spot in 1953.
