SK2042 : Osmaston Saw Mill

Osmaston Saw Mill
The valley of Shirley Brook was dammed to power mills, of which the most spectacular is this saw mill, powered a waterwheel on the other side of the building (See SK2042 : Osmaston Saw Mill). The mill is a rather eccentric alpine style building constructed in 1845 for the owners of Osmaston Hall in whose grounds the mill lies.
In this view a saw table can be seen under the eves to the left, along with the wheel with a shaft sloping down to the right to control the speed of the mill. A pair of rails is just visible in the concrete on which trucks would carry timber as it was fed on to the saw table.
