Roundhouse, Barrow Hill
Roundhouse, Barrow Hill
Midland Railway Johnson Class 1F 41708 just catches a thin shaft of sunlight from one of the many windows in the roundhouse roof. The locomotive is standing on a Cowans Sheldon well turntable, which was built in Carlisle in 1931. Cowans Sheldon & Co. Ltd., has been called one of the leading railway and maritime engineers in the world.
The turntable operates between 24 roads, the longest of which is 80 feet and the shortest 60 feet.
The operational roundhouse is the last surviving in Great Britain, built for the Midland Railway Company between 1869 and 1870 and closed in 1991. After seven years of neglect and vandalism the shed re-opened in 1998.
It has retained its connection with the mainline.
