This Midland Railway Johnson Class 1F 41708 is referred to as an 0–6–0T, which is the wheel arrangement of six coupled wheels and the ‘T’ denotes it as being a tank engine. The large water tanks can be seen at either side of the boiler. The coal is carried in a bunker behind the cab and rails have been fitted around the top to prevent spillage onto the track. The small amount of coal carried means that these types of locomotive are short range compared with locos having a tender. They were however, very manoeuvrable locomotives and worked well in yards and as station pilots.
Behind the loco can be seen the Sheer legs, a lifting arrangement.
