The memorial to Sergeant William Lawrence - Studland Churchyard
The inscription on this memorial to Sergeant William Lawrence in Studland churchyard details the military career of a remarkable soldier during the campaign in South America in 1805, and throughout the whole of the Peninsular War of 1806 - 1813. Sgt Lawrence also fought at Waterloo in 1815, in which battle he carried the Colours of his regiment, the 40th Foot. His published memoir represents one of the most important sources of information on life in the ranks during the Napoleonic Wars. Link
