NS4279 : Cist, viewed from the north-east

3 km from Auchencarroch, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

Cist, viewed from the north-east
Cist, viewed from the north-east
In the foreground is a cist, a stone coffin formed from slabs; this one was first reported by a walker (R M MacGregor) as recently as 1995 (see end-note).

The chamber itself appears to be in good condition; see NS4279 : Cist (a close-up view of the chamber). The archaeology reports do not assign any date to it; however, such a structure, which seems to have been for the burial of a prominent individual, rather than being communal in nature, would be typical of the Bronze Age.

In the background, the deep valley of the Murroch Burn follows the edge of the woods. Beyond that, the River Clyde can be seen.
