SU2667 : The road to the A4 west of Froxfield
near to Chisbury, Wiltshire, Great Britain

The road to the A4 west of Froxfield
Part of the beech woods called Cobham Frith are nearby. In the second world war this road was closed to non-military traffic as it was used to store explosive ordnance such as artillery shells. I have seen a photograph from those days showing the verges alongside the road visible here containing mini-nissen huts each protecting several hundred shells. This and other images showing the part played by Savernake Forest during the war can be seen in this gallery Link
