Moat near Doddershall House 1

This is the north side of a quadrangular moat about 350m south-west of Doddershall House. The moat is 70m square and is near the edge of a field along which flows a stream to which the moat was likely linked, see SP7119 : Stream near Doddershall House. Although this side of the moat is shown on the OS 1:25,000 map as the only side with water in it, the west side also has water. The south and east ditches are dry.

There is no evidence of buildings, though the area surrounded by the moat is very uneven. There is a deserted medieval village somewhere in the grounds of Doddershall House, but ancient ponds, moats and fisheries can be found all along this stream. Doddershall House itself is moated, though only the south side has water, see SP7220 : Moat, Doddershall House.
