SE1121 : Construction of Lowfields Bridge

near to Elland, Calderdale, Great Britain

Construction of Lowfields Bridge
Construction of Lowfields Bridge
When the old power station site was to be developed as the Lowfields business park, a new road access was needed off the Elland bypass. The railway embankment was in the way. The solution was to build a bridge around the railway line, within the embankment, then excavate for the road underneath it.

At the time the bridge was built, it looked likely that Elland would get a new station at this location, but it was another 8 years before Calder Valley passenger services resumed, by which time there was not enough money for Elland as well as Brighouse to get a new station.

For a photo of the completed bridge and road, see SE1121 : Railway Bridge 169A - Lowfields Way.
