Philiphaugh House
Philiphaugh House
This neo-Georgian mansion, built in 1964 and designed by the architect William Kininmonth, replaced an earlier house on this site. The estate has been owned by the Strang-Steel family for several generations. The battle of Philiphaugh took place over this area on the 13th September 1645 and in the grounds there is a (partisan) memorial only to the few Covenanters killed at the battle. Entrenchements dug during the battle can also be identified.
