Newburgh: Pillbox on the banks of the Ythan
This World War 2 pillbox was so placed as to defend the bridge that crosses the Ythan. The beaches to the East would have provided good landing grounds for the Germans but the Ythan Estuary forms a natural barrier to troops attempting to move inland. The bridge was, therefore, of great strategic importance.
