SU1329 : The Old Mill, Harnham
near to Harnham, Wiltshire, Great Britain

The Old Mill, Harnham
This fine old mill straddles an arm of the River Nadder as it flows around a small island. There is a substantial drop in water level from SU1329 : Rear of the Old Mill Hotel to the front. Water arriving from the north (behind the mill) either flows eastwards over a weir and round the eastern side of the little island, or it flows through SU1329 : Old Mill beer garden and mill leat to the west of the island and under the mill via SU1329 : Bridge over mill leat, where the drop in height would have formerly powered the mill's industry. The water fair surges out from beneath the mill through three arches (see SU1329 : Water outflow from under the Old Mill). The mill has now been converted to a pub, hotel and restaurant. It is an interesting old building with parts dating from a number of different eras. The large square building to the left being almost certainly Georgian, while the lower range to the right with chequerboard flint knapwork is certainly much older, perhaps C15th. It looks to have had ecclesiastical or monastic origins judging by some of the architectural features.
