The ruins of Wholehope Youth Hostel
The ruins of Wholehope Youth Hostel
This extremely remote hostel situated high in the Cheviots along Clennell Street was opened about 1949 and rapidly became the stuff of legend. Despite, or perhaps because of its remoteness, Wholehope had a loyal band of adherents and was always financially viable. However after about 1962, when the new road up to Kidlandlee was built, bikers and others began using the place for booze-ups and as a doss. There was some inappropriate behaviour (at least by YHA standards)and the authorities finally decided to pull the plug in 1965. A history of the hostel with many anecdotal accounts can be found on Trevor Hipkin's website at LinkExternal link
