NN4117 : Drainage ditch

3 km from Inverlochlarig, Stirling, Great Britain

Drainage ditch
Drainage ditch
This old ditch was partly filled in by the debris of many years. I think that draining the ground gave better grass for sheep and cattle to eat. It's one of the local signs of more intense farming activity in the past, possibly from before the clearances of people in the Highlands which happened in the 19th and late 18th centuries. As well as evicting people the landowners destroyed many farm buildings and homes.
