St Mary Matfelon's footprint, Whitechapel
The outline is all that remains of the church that formerly stood here, in what is now Altab Ali Park. The church was bomb damaged in 1940 and demolished in 1952. It was believed to have once had white walls, hence the name of the area. Matfelon was the name of the family who sponsored the first chapel in the C13.
