NN4118 : Unusual flowers on a boulder

Unusual flowers on a boulder
Unusual flowers on a boulder
This is a photo of heather and normally you could expect to find plenty of it in the valleys and on the slopes of British mountains. However, there wasn't heather anywhere around here except on top of big boulders. Could ground level heather be eaten to extinction by deer? Small boulders had no heather on them!
