TL1913 : Roman Road Pit at Chalkdell Farm

taken 12 years ago, near to Cromer Hyde, Hertfordshire, Great Britain

Roman Road Pit at Chalkdell Farm
Roman Road Pit at Chalkdell Farm
In the background is Chalkdell Farm. In the foreground is, what is apparently, the sole remaining Roman Road Pit in this area. Between the two runs the Roman Road from St Albans (Colemans Green Lane). The pit is impressively large, reputedly 120 feet in diameter and 40 feet deep - too large to photograph in one image from the ground. Five others between this point and St Albans have been filled in. It is best viewed in the winter or spring before it becomes overgrown.
