Plas Mawr, Conwy
What an amazing building this is ! It looks quite impressive from the front - but there's a lot more to this building than first meets the eye. In literature about it, it is reckoned to be the "finest surviving town house of the Elizabethan era to be found anywhere in Britain" - and having been round it I wouldn't argue with that claim. The kitchen in particular is splendid, as are the numerous rooms with unusual plasterwork - notably the amusing caryatids. It was built in three phases between 1576 and 1585 for the merchant Robert Wynn. It is now in the care of CADW Link
(the Welsh equivalent and partner of English Heritage) - and they have done a splendid job of saving and restoring this gem of a building. Incidentally a very similar view of this building is on the front cover of the Pevsner Guide to the buildings of Gwynedd - see Link
