NZ5801 : Grouse on Urra Moor

taken 15 years ago, near to Urra, North Yorkshire, Great Britain

Grouse on Urra Moor.
Grouse on Urra Moor.
Beside the Cleveland Way on Urra Moor. The red Grouse is one of the World's three species of ptarmigan. Outside Britain and Ireland, they turn white in winter, here they have adapted to the not very snowy winters by staying red. They live off young heather and wimberry shoots. The land here is managed to keep grouse stocks as high as possible.
