Loch Kinord: on top of an esker
Eskers (from the Irish word Eiscir) are ridges of sand and gravel, rather like railway embankments. Most eskers probably formed in ice tunnels cut by streams flowing through or below glaciers. When the ice finally melted the stream deposits were left as long winding ridges, sometimes many miles in length.
