NZ6901 : Botton Cross

taken 13 years ago, 3 km from Botton, North Yorkshire, Great Britain

Botton Cross
Botton Cross
On Danby High Moor.
This Cross is in poor condition except for the base which seems sound.
There are two sections lying on the ground at the base.
Although probably erected as a guide to travellers, the track here is indistinct and almost unused - however the rather charming custom of leaving coins on the Crosses in this area was observed as I noticed a ten pence coin on the (Front Left) corner of the base.
This tradition is supposedly a simple gift to any destitute traveller who should later pass that way; it may have its roots in an earlier tradition of leaving offerings at any holy or cross site.
