Dean Cemetery gravestone
Dean Cemetery gravestone
A baffling gravestone featuring three winged lions below three rams' heads on which perch three pelicans; all over a grave shared by John Leishman, Writer to the Signet (1801-61), and his grandson, Brigadier-General Offley Shore (1866-1922). These animals are Christian symbols, but could they be of masonic significance here?

[Note: A full five years after writing the above caption, I happened to come across the original design in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. It is a candelabrum based on an 18th-century drawing by Francesco Piranesi, son of the more famous father, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, who made his living inscribing the ancient monuments of Rome. There was one striking difference. The Naples object had Egyptian sphinxes where the winged lions appear here. The latter suggest a connection with St. Mark the Evangelist or the Republic of Venice.]
