Cheriton Fitzpaine: north-north-west from Upcott Barton
View from a point near Upcott Barton, a farm since Saxon times. The barton was the scene of a murder: judge Nicholas Radford, its owner, was killed by Thomas, Earl of Devon, on 23 October 1455. This event was one of the harbingers of the Wars of the Roses. Earlier, during Viking raids, the Exeter mint was removed to a castle hereabouts: its site lies in nearby fields
